What’s so funny about the Boy Bands?

There are few things that keep a group of guys from an engineering college together, and one of them happens to be this almost religious preference for Rock over good old boy bands. For four years I have seen the guys laugh, smirk and makes jokes about these very pansy groups of boys/men/or-whatever-you chose-to-call-them. Alright, so you engineering smartasses, here’s a little fact that should come as no surprise. N Sync made $ 42 million in the year 2004. 42 million to be split between 5 guys, or was it 6. Say 6 , that’s still 7 million bucks!!! That’s a lot of money.

And of that whole 6 piece group, only one or two do any of the singing/mooing/humming/lip synching/whatever-ing. The remaining, just wear very bright clothes, stand in the back ground, and grab their crotches( on stage their own, but back-stage… ?). So there are people who make $ 7 million in a year doing that.

I assume they lead very happy comfortable lives. In fact, one of the N Sync-ers, a few years ago was even planning a trip to space (seriously, and if those rocket-scientists aren’t smart enough to leave him in space, the word ‘rocket-scientist’ will find a whole new application in popular language).

Around a few years ago, the boy band phenomenon peaked! In fact, in one award show I saw this band give its debut performance, it was called the MeatCheese Boys. And for all of 5 minutes, they jumped about the stage singing, “You say Meat, we say Cheese, We are the Meat Cheese boys, the Meet Cheese Boys!”. Not too sure about how much money they made, never heard of them since…

But the point is, all of you engineers, who would laugh so condescendingly at Mr. NSyncers, what are your chances of ever getting paid 7 million dollars for on-stage crotch-grabbing? Or even off-stage crotch-grabbing?

So is money the only criterion? What about originality of music? Or meaningful lyrics, for that matter?

Playing simplistic tripe with mushy lyrics isn't our definition of art. And we don't like it. Period.

Money IS the only criterion, Shaunak. I can't live a life on meaningful lyrics or original music.

Of course, if the money comes out of original music and meaningful lyrics and an unconstipated voice - yes Janis, this means YOU - 'tis all the more sweeter!

Psst Arati, U2 made 154 million USD last year. Split that four ways.

And I havent seen Bono hold his crotch.

Yet.

@#$% even the Rolling Stones earned 90M USD. What's their average age? 105? I'd like to be senile and earning 20 million dollars per year too, please!

Money is important. No second thoughts about that. However, check out their whole phenomenon from an American perspective.

Only the teenagers used to listen'em.

When these teenagers grew up a little bit and started getting thrown out of comfort zone from parents' houses, they realised, life was harsh...and the money they spent on boybands merchandise/whatever was not worth it. Getting out of comfort zone they could relate better to the other genres: rock, adult alternative, rap, etc.

These days teenagers have a different choice...they like hip-hop: Black Eyed Peas, Kayne West, and what not.

And the engineering smartasses who make fun of boybands....well, I shall say....they would be one of those in the crowds who know nothing by criticizing....or mebbe copying trends (^C ^V) after reading from internet about something and trying to be Me-too-cool.

If you like a music, you like it.
If you don't then you don't.

It is a personal choice and noone can try to impose his/her opinion other ppl. So, if you like boybands...you like'em. If you don't then you dont.

These days...due to the person I am seeing lately, I've started liking COUNTRY music and believe me ....in da US, country has a huge following. It is simple, and versatile.

It may not be popular in India...due to variety of reasons since the celebrities of this musical genre are a little lower in international profile than the rest of the genres.
